Jewelry Care Guide

FindWeekend | Preserve the Brilliance of Every Piece

1. Daily Wear & Handling Best Practices

The manner in which you wear and handle your jewelry on a daily basis has the most profound impact on its longevity and appearance. We recommend adopting the following habits as part of your daily routine:

  • Apply cosmetics first, jewelry last. Perfumes, lotions, hairsprays, and cosmetics contain chemicals that can react with metal surfaces and degrade plating over time. Allow all beauty products to dry completely before putting on your jewelry.
  • Remove jewelry before physical activities. Take off rings, bracelets, and necklaces before exercising, swimming, gardening, or performing household chores. Sweat, chlorine, salt water, and abrasive surfaces can accelerate tarnishing, scratching, or structural damage.
  • Avoid exposure to harsh chemicals. Remove all jewelry before using cleaning products, bleach, ammonia, or other household chemicals. Even brief exposure can cause irreversible discoloration or corrosion.
  • Put on jewelry after dressing. Clothing with zippers, hooks, or rough fabrics can snag delicate chains, bend prongs, or scratch metal surfaces. Dress first, then adorn.
  • Handle with clean, dry hands. Natural oils from your skin, as well as residual moisture, can transfer to your jewelry and accelerate tarnishing or dulling of the finish.
  • Inspect clasps and settings regularly. Before wearing, give your pieces a quick visual inspection. Ensure clasps close securely, earring backs are tight, and stone settings show no signs of loosening. Early detection prevents loss.

2. Cleaning Your Jewelry

Regular cleaning removes accumulated oils, dirt, and environmental residues that can dull the luster of your jewelry. The appropriate cleaning method depends on the material and construction of each piece.

2.1 Routine Cleaning (After Each Wear)

Gently wipe your jewelry with a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth after each wear to remove skin oils, fingerprints, and light residue. This thirty-second habit is the single most effective way to maintain daily brilliance and prevent buildup that requires more intensive cleaning. We include a complimentary FindWeekend polishing cloth with every order for this purpose.

2.2 Deep Cleaning (Weekly or As Needed)

For a more thorough cleaning, prepare a solution of warm (not hot) water and a few drops of mild, phosphate-free dish soap. Submerge your jewelry for two to three minutes, then gently agitate with a soft-bristled brush—such as a baby toothbrush or dedicated jewelry brush—to dislodge debris from crevices, chain links, and setting prongs. Rinse thoroughly under lukewarm running water, ensuring all soap residue is removed. Pat completely dry with a soft, lint-free cloth and allow to air dry for several minutes before storing or wearing.

Important: Never use hot water, as thermal shock can damage certain gemstones or loosen adhesives. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners unless you are certain your piece is compatible—porous stones such as opals, pearls, emeralds, and turquoise can be damaged by ultrasonic vibrations.

2.3 Materials to Avoid

The following substances and methods can cause permanent damage to your jewelry and should be avoided entirely:

  • Bleach, chlorine, ammonia, and acetone
  • Abrasive cleaners, baking soda, and toothpaste
  • Paper towels, tissues, or rough fabrics (use only microfiber or chamois)
  • Ultrasonic cleaners for soft, porous, or fracture-filled gemstones
  • Steam cleaners for heat-sensitive stones or glued settings
  • Commercial silver dips for gold-plated or gemstone-set pieces

3. Proper Storage

How you store your jewelry when it is not being worn is equally important as how you wear it. Improper storage leads to tangling, scratching, tarnishing, and premature wear. Follow these guidelines to protect your collection:

  • Store in a cool, dry place. Avoid bathrooms, windowsills, and other areas with high humidity or direct sunlight, which accelerate tarnishing and can fade certain gemstones. A bedroom dresser drawer or dedicated jewelry armoire is ideal.
  • Use individual compartments or pouches. Each piece should be stored separately to prevent chains from tangling, stones from scratching metal surfaces, and pieces from rubbing against one another. We provide a complimentary soft pouch with every order; additional anti-tarnish storage solutions are available in our Accessories collection.
  • Keep away from wood and rubber. Certain woods contain acids that can tarnish silver, and rubber can release sulfur compounds that accelerate oxidation. Use fabric-lined boxes or acid-free tissue paper as barriers.
  • Fasten clasps and closures before storing. This prevents chains from knotting and reduces stress on clasps and links.
  • Consider anti-tarnish strips. For sterling silver pieces, place anti-tarnish strips or silica gel packets in your storage container to absorb moisture and neutralize sulfur compounds in the air. Replace these every six months.
  • Travel with care. When traveling, use a dedicated jewelry travel case with individual padded compartments. Never pack jewelry in checked luggage; always carry it in your personal item to prevent loss or theft.

4. Material-Specific Care Instructions

4.1 925 Sterling Silver

Sterling silver naturally tarnishes when exposed to air, moisture, and sulfur compounds. This is a normal chemical reaction, not a defect. To minimize tarnishing, wear your sterling silver pieces regularly—skin oils actually help prevent oxidation. Store in airtight containers with anti-tarnish strips when not in use. If tarnishing occurs, polish gently with a silver-specific cloth or use the warm soapy water method described above. Avoid commercial silver dips, as they can strip protective finishes and damage gemstones.

4.2 Gold-Plated Jewelry

Gold plating is a layer of genuine gold applied over a base metal. With proper care, high-quality plating can last several years. To extend the life of your gold-plated pieces: avoid exposure to water, sweat, and chemicals; remove before sleeping to prevent friction against bedding; store separately to prevent abrasion; and clean only with a soft, dry cloth—never use liquid cleaners or polishing compounds, which can strip the gold layer. If plating begins to wear, we offer professional re-plating services at competitive rates.

4.3 Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is highly durable and resistant to tarnishing, making it ideal for everyday wear. Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth as needed. While stainless steel is robust, it can still scratch if subjected to abrasive contact. Store separately from softer metals to prevent surface damage.

4.4 Gemstones and Diamonds

Gemstones vary widely in hardness, porosity, and chemical sensitivity. Diamonds, sapphires, and rubies are highly durable and can be cleaned with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Softer or porous stones—including pearls, opals, emeralds, turquoise, and amber—require gentler care: wipe with a damp cloth only, never submerge, and avoid all chemical exposure. Store gemstone jewelry separately to prevent harder stones from scratching softer ones.

4.5 Pearls

Pearls are organic gemstones that are exceptionally sensitive to acids, chemicals, and dehydration. Always put pearls on last and remove them first. Wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth after each wear to remove skin oils and perspiration. Never submerge pearls in water or use ultrasonic cleaners. Store flat in a soft pouch, never hanging, to prevent stretching of the silk thread. Have pearl strands restrung every one to two years if worn frequently.

5. Professional Maintenance & Services

Even with meticulous at-home care, professional maintenance is essential for preserving the structural integrity and appearance of fine jewelry. We recommend the following professional services:

  • Professional Cleaning and Inspection: Every 6 to 12 months, bring your pieces to a professional jeweler for ultrasonic cleaning, steam cleaning (where appropriate), and comprehensive inspection of prongs, clasps, and settings. Our certified bench jewelers offer these services for all FindWeekend pieces.
  • Rhodium Re-Plating: White gold jewelry should be re-plated with rhodium every 12 to 18 months to restore its bright, reflective finish. This service is available through our repair department.
  • Prong Tightening and Stone Resetting: Daily wear can loosen prongs over time. Annual inspection prevents stone loss. If you notice a stone wiggling or a prong catching on fabric, cease wearing the piece immediately and contact us for repair.
  • Chain Soldering and Clasp Replacement: Broken chains, worn clasps, and stretched links can be repaired or replaced by our workshop. Never attempt DIY repairs, as improper soldering can damage gemstones or weaken metal.
  • Pearl Restringing: Pearl necklaces and bracelets should be restrung every one to two years with fresh silk thread and individually knotted pearls to prevent loss if the strand breaks.

To request professional maintenance services, please contact us at support@findweekend.com with photographs of your piece and a description of the service required. We will provide a detailed estimate and shipping instructions for secure transit to our workshop.

6. Troubleshooting Common Issues

Tarnishing

Tarnishing is a natural chemical reaction between silver and sulfur compounds in the air. It does not indicate poor quality. Remove light tarnish with a silver polishing cloth. For heavier tarnish, use the warm soapy water method or a professional silver cleaning solution. Prevent future tarnishing by storing in airtight containers with anti-tarnish strips.

Discoloration of Gold Plating

Gold plating may gradually wear thin in high-friction areas (such as the inside of rings or the backs of pendants), revealing the base metal beneath. This is normal wear, not a defect. To minimize this, remove plating before sleep, exercise, and exposure to water or chemicals. Re-plating services are available to restore the original finish.

Loose Stones

If you notice a stone moving in its setting, a prong catching on fabric, or a rattling sound when shaking the piece gently, stop wearing it immediately. Loose stones can fall out and be lost. Contact us promptly for professional tightening or resetting.

Knots and Tangles in Chains

Never pull forcefully on a knotted chain, as this can cause breakage. Apply a small amount of baby oil or mineral oil to the knot, then use two fine pins or needles to gently work the knot apart. Once untangled, clean the chain thoroughly with warm soapy water to remove oil residue.

Lost Earring Backs

Earring backs are small and easily misplaced. We recommend purchasing a spare set of high-quality backs (such as La Pousette or screw-back styles) and storing them in your jewelry box. If you lose a back, cease wearing the earring until a replacement is secured to prevent loss of the earring itself.

7. Warranty, Repairs & Replacements

All FindWeekend jewelry is covered by our one-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects, as detailed in our Terms of Service. This warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship but does not extend to damage caused by accidents, misuse, neglect, improper care, or normal wear and tear.

If your piece requires repair outside the warranty period or due to wear-related damage, our certified bench jewelers offer comprehensive repair services including resizing, stone replacement, chain repair, clasp replacement, re-plating, and professional cleaning. We do not perform repairs on jewelry not purchased from FindWeekend, as we cannot verify the quality or origin of materials.

To initiate a repair request, email support@findweekend.com with clear photographs of the damage, your order number, and a description of the issue. We will respond with a service estimate and instructions for secure shipping to our workshop.
